Indonesia to Introduce AI and Coding as Optional Subjects in Over 50,000 Schools

The Indonesian government is set to introduce artificial intelligence (AI) and coding as optional subjects across more than 50,000 schools, covering elementary to high school levels. Education Minister Abdul Mu'ti confirmed the initiative, emphasizing the program's gradual rollout starting from fifth grade in elementary schools and the first grade in junior and senior high schools.

"It's not part of the core curriculum but an optional subject," Mu'ti explained during his visit to a media office in West Jakarta on June 5, 2025.

Teacher Training and Academic Support

The government has prepared academic guidelines and clearly defined learning outcomes for these new subjects, which are publicly available. To support the rollout, teachers from both ICT backgrounds and other disciplines have undergone training sessions, with the program already reaching its ninth batch.

"Teachers who never taught AI or coding before are now being trained, alongside those who previously taught ICT," Mu'ti said.

Current Adoption and Future Prospects

While the subjects remain optional for now, many private schools have already started offering AI and coding from the first grade of elementary school, especially in Jakarta.

"In Jakarta, many schools have introduced these subjects from first grade," the minister noted.

Although Mu'ti did not provide detailed information about the readiness of public schools across different regions, he estimated that the number of trained teachers aligns roughly with the number of schools prepared to implement the subjects.

"There are about 50,000 schools ready, so the number of teachers ready is roughly the same," he added.

What This Means for Educators

  • Optional AI and coding subjects offer new opportunities for schools to equip students with relevant skills early on.
  • Teacher training is key to ensuring quality delivery, regardless of prior ICT experience.
  • Private schools are leading the way, with public schools expected to follow as resources and training expand.

Educators interested in expanding their AI and coding skills can explore practical courses and certifications to stay ahead. For example, Complete AI Training offers specialized certifications in coding and AI tailored for educators and professionals.

As Indonesia begins this rollout, schools and teachers will play a crucial role in shaping how students engage with technology from an early age.
