KA Imaging wins $450K to build AI triage tool for chest X-rays
KA Imaging received a $450,000 award from INOVAIT to develop an AI system that flags abnormalities on spectral X-ray images. The tool will identify pulmonary nodules, consolidation, pleural fluid, and pneumotharax, then prioritize cases for clinician review before and after image-guided procedures.
The company will build the system using data from its Reveal 35C detector, which captures dual-energy imaging in a single exposure. A working demonstration is expected in 2027.
Technical approach
Spectral X-ray technology captures multiple energy levels simultaneously, providing more detail than conventional imaging. This data gives AI models richer information to work with when identifying abnormalities.
The project targets non-radiologist clinicians-nurses, physician assistants, and technicians-who need to assess cases quickly in clinical settings. By automating the triage step, the system aims to reduce the time between image capture and specialist review.
Partnership and timeline
The University of Waterloo is collaborating on the research. INOVAIT, Canada's image-guided therapy and AI commercialization network, funded the work as part of its pilot program.
Development is underway, with the demonstration slated for 2027. No launch date has been announced.
