Karnataka Backs AI Centre for Biotech Research in Bengaluru
The Karnataka Cabinet has approved a new AI Centre of Excellence in Biotechnology, a four-year project with 20 crore rupees in funding. The centre will operate from the Institute of Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology (IBAB) in partnership with the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Platforms (C-CAMP).
The centre will focus on AI for Healthcare applications including drug discovery, genomics, diagnostics, and precision medicine. These areas are becoming central to how digital health systems operate.
Bengaluru already hosts a dense cluster of research institutions, startups, and global technology firms. IBAB has established itself in bioinformatics research and skill development, while C-CAMP has backed deep-tech innovation in life sciences.
IT-BT Minister Priyank Kharge said: "Karnataka has consistently been at the forefront of technological innovation."
The cabinet also green-lit a separate Technology & Innovation Museum project in east Bengaluru with a 100 crore rupee budget. The museum will be built at NGEF in Baiyappanahalli under a public-private partnership model, with the Unboxing BLR Foundation taking a 51% stake in the Karnataka Technology & Innovation Museum Foundation.
For healthcare professionals, the AI centre's focus on AI for Science & Research signals growing investment in tools that can accelerate drug development and improve diagnostic accuracy.
