Report Builder came under the same scrutiny
For the Pro product, the arbitrator compared Report Builder's outputs to human-written newsletters that synthesize and analyze multiple sources. While those newsletters are edited and held to standards, the AI outputs were described as "erroneous and even absurd," with an implied expectation that readers would fact check after publication.
Management noted the tool was built by product engineers outside the newsroom. The ruling dismissed this defense: building AI outside editorial doesn't exempt it from the company's standards if it produces content presented as reporting.

The arbitrator stopped short of a cease-and-desist, citing potential business harm. Instead, Politico must enter a 60-day bargaining period on both tools and negotiate remedies for past violations, with continued oversight.
Politico leadership said they respect the decision and will follow through under the collective bargaining agreement. They also reiterated that the organization plans to lead on AI while relying on editors and reporters for judgment and accountability.
