Head of Data, Emerging Technology and AI Audit: Lead the Assurance Agenda at State Street

State Street is hiring a Managing Director to build and lead Corporate Audit's Data, Emerging Technology, and AI Audit team. You'll report to the Global Head of Technology & Cyber Audit and direct global coverage for data governance, AI risk, and new technology across the enterprise. Primary locations include Boston or Quincy (MA), Clifton (NJ), Toronto (ON), London (UK), and Bangalore (IN). Compensation: €110,000-€233,750 annual, plus a comprehensive benefits package.

Why this role matters

Institutional investors count on State Street to manage risk and drive performance. Your team will provide clear assurance on data, AI/ML, and emerging tech so the business can move with confidence. The mandate is simple: practical oversight, measurable control improvements, and reporting leaders can act on.

What you'll own

  • Set and execute a multi-year, risk-based audit plan covering data governance, AI/ML, and emerging technologies.
  • Maintain a fit-for-purpose audit methodology and continuous monitoring of regulatory changes and industry practices.
  • Build, coach, and scale a high-performing global team with deep data, AI/ML, and technology assurance skills.
  • Manage senior stakeholder and regulator relationships; influence sustainable improvements to processes and controls.
  • Draft, review, and present audit findings, memos, and reports to senior and executive management.
  • Participate as a non-voting member on steering committees and working groups; promote balanced discussion and healthy challenge.
  • Provide forward-looking insight on data, AI, and technology regulations; coordinate interactions with global regulators.

What success looks like in 12 months

  • A clear, risk-based coverage plan is in motion with trackable milestones and outcomes.
  • Material issues drive root-cause fixes and control uplift that stick.
  • Credibility with executives and regulators is strong, backed by crisp reporting and consistent follow-through.
  • The team has recognizable depth in AI governance, data quality, privacy, and model risk.
  • Continuous monitoring is active, and audit scope adjusts ahead of change-not after it.

The leadership profile that fits

  • Strategic thinker who can simplify complex topics for decision-makers.
  • Clear, concise communicator with strong presentation and stakeholder skills.
  • Hands-on people leader who hires well, sets expectations, and coaches for outcomes.
  • Comfort with ambiguity; able to prioritize, move fast, and hold a high bar for quality.
  • Professional curiosity and healthy skepticism, paired with sound judgment.

Experience and credentials

  • Bachelor's degree in Data/Computer Science, Engineering, Technology, Accountancy, or related field; postgraduate study is a plus.
  • One or more certifications (e.g., CPA, CIA, CISA, CISSP, CISM, CDMP, AAIA, AAISM or equivalent).
  • 15+ years in assurance, ideally in financial services, data governance and risk, and technology innovation.
  • Depth across data governance, privacy and protection; AI/ML model lifecycle risk; bias/fairness and explainability; data quality, lineage, and integrity.
  • Strong grasp of data and AI regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA, EU AI Act) and how they translate into controls.
  • Experience auditing new financial technologies, including digital assets and tokenization.
  • Audit background in regulated environments (public accounting or internal audit) and leading large, diverse teams.
  • Operates in line with the Institute of Internal Auditors' Standards (IIA Standards) and current AI regulation such as the EU AI Act.

Where you'll work

  • Boston, MA (US)
  • Quincy, MA (US)
  • Clifton, NJ (US)
  • Toronto, ON (CA)
  • London (UK)
  • Bangalore (IN)
