Wall Street Banks Deploy AI Agents to Automate Core Operations
Major U.S. banks are rolling out artificial intelligence systems to automate workflows across trading, research, legal review, and back-office functions. JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and Citi have all launched agent platforms in the past year, combining large language models with proprietary data and internal systems to handle multistep tasks that previously required human analysts.
JPMorgan invests roughly $18 billion annually in technology and runs an internal platform called LLM Suite that lets employees interact with AI agents trained on firm data. Other banks deploy similar frameworks, including Salesforce's Agentforce, to automate document drafting, investment deck generation, proxy voting, and trade support.
How Banks Are Building These Systems
Banks are not using off-the-shelf chatbots. They build custom layers that connect external language models to internal databases, compliance rules, and trading systems. JPMorgan updates LLM Suite every eight weeks, adding new datasets and business logic to keep the system aligned with firm operations.
The technical approach follows a pattern: pair a foundation model from vendors like OpenAI or Anthropic with retrieval systems that pull relevant internal documents, then add human approval gates and security checks before the AI output reaches production systems or client-facing services.
Early Productivity Gains, With Caveats

Banks are also investing heavily in security. What Operations Teams Need to Know
Three factors will determine how quickly these systems mature:

Analysts caution that the transition will be long and expensive, with significant constraints around regulatory compliance and risk management. Banks cannot move as fast as tech companies because the cost of errors-market manipulation, data breaches, regulatory violations-is too high.
