Malaysia and India Plan IIT Campus in Malaysia
Malaysia and India have proposed establishing an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) campus in Malaysia. This initiative was announced by Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during discussions held at the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro. IITs are among India’s premier higher education institutions, renowned for their focus on engineering and technology.
The move aims to deepen educational collaboration between the two countries and enhance people-to-people connections. Malaysia is committed to strengthening ties through cooperation in culture, tourism, and education, while India is exploring investment opportunities in sectors such as the digital economy, artificial intelligence, renewable energy, and aerospace.
Expanding Strategic Cooperation
During a bilateral meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Anwar Ibrahim highlighted the potential to boost cooperation across various fields, including trade, investment, digital technology, and defence. Both leaders also emphasized the importance of maintaining regional peace and stability, supporting peaceful solutions to international conflicts like those in Palestine and Jammu-Kashmir.
Malaysia welcomes efforts to enhance the ASEAN-India partnership, with the upcoming ASEAN-India Summit scheduled to take place in Kuala Lumpur this October.
Engagement with South Africa
Anwar Ibrahim also met with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to discuss expanding cooperation in agriculture, automotive, tourism, and halal industries. Both leaders agreed on reassessing existing partnerships and exploring new avenues for strategic investments.
Additionally, Malaysia expressed appreciation for South Africa’s support for the Palestinian cause and its involvement in international legal efforts at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
