Malaysia Introduces AI Communication Guidelines for Media and PR Professionals
Malaysia is set to launch new Guidelines for Responsible AI Communication aimed at professionals in media, public relations, and digital content creation. These guidelines will support ethical, transparent, and trustworthy communication as AI increasingly influences public discourse.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil emphasized that technology should serve humanity rather than replace it. He called on communication professionals to lead with purpose, guided by inclusive and transparent principles. “Even as machines evolve, human ethics and judgment must lead,” Fahmi stated during his keynote address at the Kuala Lumpur International PR Conference (KLIP 7).
Supporting Malaysia’s National AI Roadmap
The guidelines are designed to complement Malaysia’s National AI Roadmap, ensuring that AI-driven communication aligns with ethical standards. Fahmi highlighted the importance of maintaining human values in an age where communication is borderless and heavily influenced by AI.
Delivering his message virtually from Geneva, where he led the Malaysian delegation at the World Summit on the Information Society+20 High-Level Event (WSIS+20), Fahmi noted that Malaysia’s ASEAN chairmanship requires leadership grounded in vision, empathy, and ethics — not just authority.
The Venice Pledge and Global Ethical Benchmarks
The minister drew attention to the Venice Pledge, endorsed by the Global Alliance for Public Relations, as a rising global standard for ethical AI communication led by humans. Fahmi praised the involvement of Malaysians in shaping this pledge, specifically highlighting Jaffri Amin Osman, president of the Institute of Public Relations Malaysia (IPRM), who serves on the Global Alliance board.
Fahmi also congratulated the recipients of the ASEAN PR Excellence Awards, recognizing outstanding contributions in the communications field.
KLIP 7: A Platform for AI and Communication Insights
Since 2019, the Kuala Lumpur International PR Conference has been a vital event for PR leaders, professionals, and academics across ASEAN and beyond. This year’s KLIP 7 focused on “Impactful AI, Social Media Communication and Online Education,” underlining the transformative role of technology in information consumption and communication.
The conference featured a range of international, ASEAN, and national speakers, panel discussions, and interactive sessions, providing valuable insights and networking opportunities for attendees.
