Marietta Schools to Form AI Committee Before Classroom Rollout
Marietta City Schools Superintendent Mary Schaeffer presented plans to the board of education Monday to train students and staff on artificial intelligence use, but stopped short of immediate implementation. The district will form a faculty committee to evaluate tools and policies before moving forward.
Schaeffer highlighted MagicSchool, an AI for Education platform designed for curriculum building. The tool creates personalized learning materials based on student and teacher input, and includes built-in safeguards for student protection.
"What I'd like to do is take a closer look," Schaeffer said. "They help to create those guardrails which protects our students and is also guidance for our staff."
The superintendent said MagicSchool already operates in multiple school districts. She emphasized the need to provide proper support to both staff and students during any rollout.
The committee will examine how to train teachers to use AI effectively in their classrooms. Schaeffer said staff members have already begun exploring community partnerships and engagement opportunities, suggesting district-wide interest in new tools.
Other Board Business
The board discussed the future of Harmar Elementary School, a property with unclear ownership. Board President Cody Parman said the district wants to complete a district-wide assessment before deciding whether to claim any interest in the building.
Multiple entities have expressed interest in the property. Board member Russ Garrison suggested the district could transfer its rights to the city, which could then negotiate with state or federal authorities if necessary.
Parman said further research is underway. The district told city council it will wait until the assessment concludes before taking action.
The board also recognized four students with Focused and Fierce Awards: Dominic Hardie from Marietta High School, Bentley Barnes from Marietta Elementary, Henry Dye from Phillips Elementary, and Charlie McKitrick from Washington Elementary.
