India establishes tech-policy committee to guide AI governance
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has created a Technology and Policy Expert Committee (TPEC) to advise India's AI Governance and Economic Group (AIGEG) on policy design, regulatory measures, and global AI engagement.
The committee, chaired by MeitY's secretary, draws members from academia, technology companies, and digital policy fields. It will translate technical developments and regulatory approaches into actionable recommendations for government decision-makers.
What the committee will do
- Brief the AIGEG on emerging AI capabilities and potential regulatory gaps
- Monitor global AI policy developments and best practices
- Provide technical guidance on complex policy issues
- Shape India's position in international AI governance discussions
The TPEC will factor India's socio-economic and strategic priorities into its analysis, according to the government announcement.
How governance will work
The AIGEG sets strategic direction and coordinates policy across government agencies. The TPEC provides subject-matter expertise to support that work, creating what the government describes as better alignment between strategic, technical, and regulatory decisions.
Government officials said the structure aims to ensure AI governance remains current as the technology develops.
For government employees working on AI for Government initiatives, understanding this governance framework matters. Those involved in policy work may find the AI Learning Path for Policy Makers relevant to staying current on how AI governance structures operate.
