Newsroom Discovers AI-Generated Column, Tightens Verification Standards

Mississippi Free Press discovered this week that an opinion column published in April was written by artificial intelligence, not the author whose name appeared in the byline. The newsroom has removed the column and is implementing new verification procedures to prevent similar incidents.

The deception came to light when the supposed author submitted an invoice with a different name. The Voices editor investigated and found dead social media links, a fabricated résumé, and an AI-generated headshot.

Further review uncovered additional AI-generated submissions from fake authors with different names, all appearing to originate from outside the country. None of those columns were published.

The Verification Challenge

The column didn't raise immediate red flags during the editorial review process. AI writing has become sophisticated enough that detection tools are unreliable, making manual verification essential.

The editor acknowledged the mistake was hers. "It's unfortunate that I have to treat new writers with this level of suspicion, but that is the world we live in and the adjustment I will make," she said.

The newsroom has pulled three additional columns based on similar warning signs discovered during the investigation.

New Safeguards in Place

Mississippi Free Press is developing a formal AI policy and will provide training to help staff detect AI-generated content. The newsroom is also tightening writing quality standards, emphasizing local networks for freelancer recruitment, and focusing on Mississippi-based topics.

The publication's standard is clear: all published words must be original, quotes must be accurate, and information must be verifiable. That expectation applies to reporters and opinion columnists alike.

"When the Mississippi Free Press publishes a story or a column, it comes with a higher level of credibility than what you may see on social media or an independent blog post," the editor said.

Maintaining Voice and Authenticity

The newsroom recognizes a broader concern: as large language models improve, distinguishing AI writing from human writing may become impossible. That prospect troubles editors who value what authentic writers bring to journalism.

"Every great writer has a unique voice and work to bring that out in our reporter team and freelancers alike," the editor said.

For writers interested in contributing, Mississippi Free Press accepts original Voices columns at voices@mississippifreepress.org. The publication is actively recruiting freelancers who meet its standards for original reporting and authentic voice.

For those working in writing roles, understanding how AI for Writers functions-and its limitations-is increasingly important for maintaining editorial integrity.
