Mississippi released a statewide artificial intelligence education framework Thursday, mapping the AI skills students need from kindergarten through career leadership. The state is among the first to establish such a structured plan.

The AI for Education framework spans 27 pages and was developed by the AI Workforce Readiness Council, part of the State Workforce Investment Board, in partnership with AccelerateMS and the Mississippi Artificial Intelligence Network (MAIN).

The framework centers on 11 core AI skills, with competency levels ranging from basic AI understanding to ethical reasoning, cybersecurity awareness, and real-world applications. It targets sectors specific to Mississippi: agriculture, coastal resilience, advanced manufacturing, and healthcare.

The state positions the framework around a principle that AI should strengthen human judgment, not replace it. The priorities ensure alignment between classroom instruction, training programs, and employer needs.

Dr. Courtney Taylor, executive director of AccelerateMS, said the framework prepares students across the state - from the Delta to the Gulf Coast - to adapt and compete in a changing economy.

Kollin Napier, director of MAIN and chair of the AI Workforce Readiness Council, said the framework "keeps human judgment at the center of every decision and gives educators and employers a clear path to equip learners with the skills needed to succeed in an AI-driven economy."

Educators implementing the framework will need to develop their own AI literacy. The AI Learning Path for Teachers offers structured training for classroom instruction.

Governor Tate Reeves said the framework demonstrates Mississippi's approach to building industries of the future. "This cutting-edge framework gives our students, educators, and workforce development partners a clear roadmap to ensure Mississippians have the education and skills they need to succeed in a rapidly changing economy," he said.
