Mississippi Creates AI Skills Framework for Students and Workers
Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves announced Thursday a statewide framework designed to help students and workers develop artificial intelligence skills across all education levels, from kindergarten through professional careers.
The Mississippi Statewide AI Framework serves as a flexible guide rather than a mandatory curriculum. Schools, colleges, and workforce development centers can use it to design programs that meet statewide priorities and local needs.
The state's AI Workforce Readiness Council developed the framework in partnership with AccelerateMS, the state's workforce development office, and the Mississippi Artificial Intelligence Network. The framework will be updated as AI technology advances.
Eleven Core Skill Domains
The framework organizes AI competencies around 11 core skill domains. These include foundational AI understanding, ethical reasoning, cybersecurity awareness, and real-world application in specific industries.
Mississippi identified four sectors where AI skills are particularly valuable: precision agriculture, coastal resilience, advanced manufacturing, and healthcare.

For educators, the framework provides a structured roadmap to integrate AI instruction into existing programs. Rather than starting from scratch, teachers can reference the defined competencies and stage-by-stage progression to align their teaching with state priorities.
Resources like the AI Learning Path for Teachers can help educators understand how to implement these competencies in classrooms. The AI for Education collection also offers practical guidance for K-12 and higher education institutions building AI programs.
Reeves said the framework positions Mississippi to develop the industries of the future. "Artificial intelligence is going to transform industries, and this framework gives our students, educators, and workforce development partners a clear roadmap to ensure Mississippians have the education and skills they need to succeed in a rapidly changing economy," he said.
