Most Americans doubt government will ensure AI is used appropriately

Two-thirds of Americans think U.S. government policy will certainly or probably fail to ensure AI is used appropriately, according to a CBS News poll conducted May 13-15.

The skepticism crosses demographic lines. Majorities of Americans across age groups and education levels share this doubt. Democrats and independents largely agree, while Republicans are divided on the question.

Those who distrust government policy on AI are especially likely to believe the technology will eliminate U.S. jobs. A majority of Americans already think AI will reduce employment overall.

Why companies push AI adoption

When asked why AI companies and developers encourage AI use, large majorities identified two motives: gaining more power for themselves and replacing human workers.

Smaller but still substantial majorities cited legitimate reasons-making scientific and medical advances, and simplifying everyday tasks for people.

Age shapes AI job concerns

Most Americans across age groups expect AI to eliminate jobs. Younger people express this concern less frequently than older Americans, likely because they use AI more regularly and understand it better.

Previous CBS News polling found younger Americans report using AI themselves and understanding it at higher rates than older populations.

What this means for policymakers

Government officials tasked with AI oversight face a credibility challenge. Public doubt about regulatory effectiveness is widespread and consistent across political affiliation and education level.

For those responsible for developing AI policy, understanding these public concerns is essential. AI Learning Path for Policy Makers provides foundational knowledge on how the technology works and its implications for regulation.

Poll methodology: The survey included 2,064 U.S. adults interviewed between May 13-15, 2026. The sample was weighted by gender, age, race, education, and 2024 presidential vote. Margin of error: ±2.7 points.
