Mount Hutt College Principal Takes 12-Week Sabbatical Focused on AI and Leadership

Jack Saxon, principal of Mount Hutt College, is stepping away from school duties for 12 weeks to pursue professional development overseas and enjoy some downtime. His sabbatical includes visits to education institutions across the United States, Singapore, Thailand, and Japan, along with time for family and personal interests.

Exploring AI in Education

Saxon’s main professional goal during the sabbatical is to understand how artificial intelligence (AI) is being used by educators to reduce workload and improve efficiency. He plans to observe how AI tools help teachers and leaders reduce administrative and assessment tasks, freeing them to focus more on teaching and learning.

“The potential for AI to ease pressure on staff is significant,” Saxon said. “It allows educators to concentrate on their passion — supporting students.”

His visits include San Diego State University and several high schools in California, where he will see AI integration firsthand. This aligns with the growing interest in educational AI tools and training, such as those offered through Complete AI Training.

Leadership Development and International Collaboration

Another focus is leadership development. Saxon will attend the Educational Leadership programme at the Singapore Institute of Technology and connect with schools in Thailand linked to Mount Hutt College. These opportunities are expected to enhance leadership skills among students and staff.

In Japan, Saxon plans to spend time with his family while also visiting Yumegaoka Junior High School, Mount Hutt College’s sister school. He will help set up plans for upcoming student trips, including a 2026 visit involving junior students.

Balancing Work and Wellbeing

The sabbatical represents Saxon’s first break in 11 years as a school leader, which includes previous roles at Kaitaia College and Mount Hutt College since 2019. Besides professional learning, Saxon is taking time for rest and family activities, including trips to Central Otago and Nelson.

He is also supporting the college’s mountain biking team competing at the New Zealand Secondary School MTB Championships and plans to add a pizza oven to his home outdoor area.

School Leadership During the Sabbatical

While Saxon is away, the school will be led by acting principal Jess McConnell, supported by deputy principals Kaylib Gorrie and Carolyn Fordyce. Todd Houston and Lachlan Tantau will join as acting assistant principals for the period.

Saxon is scheduled to return to Mount Hutt College on November 2.
