Musk Calls for Government Payments to Offset AI Job Losses

Elon Musk is pushing for the federal government to issue direct payments to Americans to counter job displacement from artificial intelligence. He framed the proposal as "Universal HIGH INCOME via checks issued by the Federal government" in a post that reached 38 million people within 12 hours.

The move marks an unusual position for Musk, who has spent considerable political capital demanding steep cuts to government spending. His short-lived Department of Government Efficiency focused on slashing federal programs, and he appeared at conservative events with a chainsaw to dramatize his push for budget reductions.

The Productivity Argument

Musk argued that AI-driven productivity gains will prevent inflation that typically accompanies large government spending programs. "AI/robotics will produce goods & services far in excess of the increase in the money supply, so there will not be inflation," he said.

The proposal echoes Universal Basic Income, a concept that provides citizens unconditional cash to cover essentials like rent, food, and healthcare regardless of employment status.

Tension With Prior Positions

The stance creates a tension with Musk's recent actions. Trump-era cuts to Medicare and food assistance have reduced disposable income for low-income Americans. Musk previously broke with Trump over what he viewed as insufficient spending cuts in government legislation.

The timing reflects growing public concern about AI's economic effects. Generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok are already reshaping labor markets across sectors.

For government workers specifically, understanding how AI policy develops at the federal level matters directly to workforce planning. Resources like AI for Government and information on Generative AI and LLM systems can help public sector employees assess these shifts.
