Narayana Health Launches AIRA: AI Tool to Streamline Patient Data Management
Narayana Health's Athma incubator has introduced AIRA, an AI-powered system aimed at simplifying patient record management. Built by a team of nearly 90 engineers, AIRA is set to be implemented across multiple countries including India, Malaysia, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Kenya, and the Cayman Islands.
Devi Shetty, Chairman of Narayana Health, shared that over the last 20 years, the organization has invested approximately Rs 500 crore in developing AI infrastructure to improve healthcare delivery.
How AIRA Improves Patient Data Handling
AIRA leverages advanced artificial intelligence to process both digital and scanned patient records. It instantly generates clinical timelines and smart tags, making sure no essential information is missed. Clinicians can input data through touch, natural speech, or even by ambient listening during consultations, with the system automatically structuring the information accurately.
This approach enhances efficiency by reducing manual documentation effort and minimizing errors in patient records, which are critical for effective treatment.
Reducing Errors and Healthcare Costs
Shetty emphasized that AI’s role is crucial in decreasing mistakes in patient data while lowering overall healthcare expenses. He explained that millions of data points flood in from diverse sources, creating challenges in capturing every detail. AI helps by organizing this information quickly, allowing doctors to access comprehensive patient data with ease.
Such improvements can double or even triple medical staff productivity, enabling better patient care and reducing errors. Increased productivity naturally drives down costs, making healthcare more affordable.
Future Capabilities and Integration
- Real-time risk prediction and proactive alerts
- Integration with wearables and external health records
- Unified 360° patient profile across the care continuum
AIRA is designed to be scalable and adaptable for hospitals of any size. It complements Narayana Health’s other digital tools such as Aadi (for doctors), Namah (for nurses), and Aham (for administrators), which collectively improve healthcare workflows.
Jagadeesh Ramasamy, Head of Products at Athma, highlighted that predictive analytics and continuous monitoring enable hospitals to shift focus from crisis management to early intervention, preventing emergencies before they occur.
Healthcare Sector Growth and Challenges
India’s healthcare market is projected to grow from $1.10 billion in 2022 to $5.15 billion by 2030. Key drivers include telemedicine, AI, and digital record management. However, many doctors still spend close to six hours daily on electronic health records, often exceeding patient-facing time. This contributes to significant burnout, with 91 percent working beyond office hours.
Adopting AI tools like AIRA can help address these challenges by streamlining workflows and reducing the administrative burden on medical professionals.
