NerdzFactory, Raspberry Pi, and Google Launch AI Training for Nigerian Teachers
A new initiative is set to train 3,150 secondary school teachers across five Nigerian states in artificial intelligence (AI). The programme, “Experience AI,” is a collaboration between NerdzFactory Company, the UK’s Raspberry Pi Foundation, and Google DeepMind. It targets teachers in Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, and Ekiti states, with the goal of reaching over 157,000 students by 2026.
Blended Training Approach for Maximum Reach
The training will combine online and in-person sessions. About 70% of the programme will be delivered through live online classes and digital materials, while 30% will be hands-on workshops, especially in areas with limited internet connectivity. The programme will run until December 2026, following Nigeria’s academic calendar, and will focus on public schools in rural and underserved communities.
Empowering Teachers to Inspire Innovation
Ade Olowojoba, Founding Partner at NerdzFactory, emphasized that equipping teachers with AI skills will help them inspire students and build confidence in using AI technology effectively. The initiative aims to democratize AI education, making it accessible to all young Nigerians regardless of their background or location.
“Experience AI is more than learning about artificial intelligence; it’s about giving teachers and students the tools to create and lead,” Olowojoba said.
Global Collaboration Supporting Local Education
Katherine Leadbetter, Global Partnerships Manager at the Raspberry Pi Foundation, explained that the programme aligns with UNESCO’s AI competency framework. It provides educators with the resources and knowledge needed to teach AI clearly and confidently, helping students grasp AI’s real-world applications.
Adewolu Adene, Google’s Head of Government Affairs and Public Policy for West Africa, described the launch as a key moment for Nigeria’s education sector. He highlighted the importance of giving young Nigerians the chance to learn about AI technology safely and effectively as it becomes increasingly central to daily life.
State Support and Practical AI Applications
Representatives from Lagos State’s Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology highlighted AI’s potential to improve sectors like agriculture and security. Examples include AI-powered apps that diagnose poultry diseases and advanced facial and voice recognition technologies that enhance security measures.
The ministry assured ongoing support, offering access to in-house AI experts to collaborate on the programme.
Improving Education Outcomes and Preparing for the Future
Education leaders from participating states praised the initiative for its focus on quality education and future readiness. They noted that integrating AI into the curriculum will enhance learning outcomes and develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration skills essential for an AI-driven world.
This programme represents a practical step to equip Nigerian educators and students with the knowledge and confidence to use AI in meaningful ways, preparing them for future challenges and opportunities.
