7th NOAA AI Workshop: Exploring Generative AI for Environmental Science
The 7th NOAA AI Workshop is scheduled for September 16–17, 2025, focusing on generative AI (GenAI) applications in environmental science. This hybrid event will bring together science experts and industry leaders at the National Science Foundation’s National Center for Atmospheric Research Green Campus in Boulder, Colorado, with options for virtual participation as well.
Workshop Series Overview
This year’s workshop series wraps up with a two-day event covering a broad spectrum of topics related to GenAI in environmental sciences. The sessions and panels are designed to provide insights into practical applications of generative AI in earth and space sciences.
- Part 1: March 3, 2025 (Virtual) — “Generative Modeling for Earth and Space Sciences.” This session has concluded, with video recordings available in August 2025.
- Part 2: June 9, 2025 (Virtual) — “Generative AI for Information Services.” This event has also concluded; recordings will be released in August 2025.
- Part 3: September 16–17, 2025 (Hybrid) — Final event titled “Generative AI for Earth and Space Science Applications” held in Boulder, Colorado, and online.
AI Integration within NOAA
Since its establishment in 2021, the NOAA Center for Artificial Intelligence (NCAI) has supported expanding AI and machine learning applications across the organization. AI helps streamline scientific research and automate tasks traditionally done manually, improving efficiency and data handling.
NOAA recently incorporated Google’s Gemini AI into its Google Workspace, enabling staff to apply generative AI tools to both scientific and administrative workflows. The agency also highlights AI innovations via a comprehensive StoryMap showcasing AI in practice across NOAA divisions.
Registration Details
Those interested in attending in person must register by August 29, 2025, or until capacity is reached. Hybrid registration remains open until September 15, 2025. This event is especially valuable for professionals working in environmental science, atmospheric research, and related fields who want to understand practical uses of generative AI.
