North Carolina Treasury Expands AI Use After Productivity Gains in Pilot
The North Carolina Department of State Treasurer is rolling out artificial intelligence tools across all operations following a successful 12-week pilot program that showed productivity improvements of up to 10% in some divisions.
The department tested OpenAI's ChatGPT and other AI platforms with select teams last year. Results prompted officials to move forward with full-scale implementation, with employees across all divisions now undergoing training.
What the Tools Will Do
The department plans to use AI for coding support, audit comparisons, research, brainstorming, identifying hidden data patterns, and legal compliance work. Different divisions will use platforms tailored to their specific needs.
State Treasurer Brad Briner said the move reflects a responsibility to taxpayers. "We have a moral obligation to the taxpayer to use their money wisely," he said. "That means improving the efficiency of everything we do as state government, and artificial intelligence is already being used throughout the private sector with stunning results."
Security Remains the Priority
The department's chief information officer, Lawrence Koffa, said strict policies protect sensitive information. "It's my team's responsibility to make sure private and personal information never leaks from our department," he said. "Safety and security are paramount."
The IT team will monitor AI usage and effectiveness as the rollout progresses, allowing division leaders to adjust how tools are deployed over time.
