UK Government names Pearson to lead AI workforce training program

The UK government has appointed Pearson as a partner to deliver its AI Skills Boost initiative, a scheme designed to train 10 million workers in artificial intelligence by 2030. The announcement comes as employers report a widening gap between the AI skills workers possess and those the economy needs.

Pearson will work alongside the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and 11 other industry partners including Amazon, Google, IBM, and Microsoft. The company will focus on training delivery, skills assessment, and digital credentialling to verify workforce readiness at scale.

Why this matters for government

AI adoption is accelerating across sectors, but workforce capability is not keeping pace. Without workers trained in AI fundamentals and advanced techniques, organisations cannot translate AI investment into productivity gains or economic returns.

The initiative covers a range of skills-from introductory AI literacy to data science and machine learning engineering. Courses will be government-backed and delivered online.

Sharon Hague, UK CEO of Pearson, said the company would "draw from our trusted expertise in training provision, assessments and digital credentialling to strengthen employer confidence."

AI Minister Kanishka Narayan said the scheme addresses a critical need: "To realise the benefits of AI, we need to ensure people right across the UK have the skills to use it with confidence."

What government professionals should know

If your department is evaluating workforce development in AI, this initiative signals the government's commitment to scaling training delivery. The focus on verified skills-rather than training participation alone-means credentials will carry weight with employers assessing capability.

For those working on digital skills policy or departmental transformation, the AI for Government learning path provides context on how public sector organisations are implementing AI skills programs.
