Pentagon Expands AI Deals Beyond Anthropic Dispute

The Pentagon announced Friday that it had secured agreements with major technology companies to expand military artificial intelligence capabilities on classified networks. The deals represent a shift in strategy after months of disagreement with Anthropic over how its AI model could be deployed.

The Pentagon previously confirmed agreements with OpenAI, Google, and Elon Musk's xAI. New deals include Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Reflection AI, a startup.

What the Agreements Cover

All companies agreed to allow the Pentagon to use their technology for "any lawful use"-a condition Anthropic initially resisted. Anthropic had been the only AI model available on classified networks before the new agreements.

The Pentagon said the deals would help service members make faster decisions, but did not detail specific applications. Potential uses include generating target lists for military strikes or analyzing large datasets for intelligence.

Cloud Infrastructure vs. AI Models

The cloud computing agreements are less consequential than the deals with OpenAI and Google. Cloud companies host the models, but the agreements with AI creators determine how the Pentagon actually deploys artificial intelligence in military operations.

The Pentagon said the agreements would help establish "the United States military as an A.I.-first fighting force."

The Anthropic Dispute

Anthropic and the Pentagon have been at odds over whether its AI model should be used for autonomous drone operations or domestic surveillance. The company's resistance to unrestricted military use prompted the Defense Department to pursue alternatives.

For government professionals overseeing technology procurement or policy, understanding these shifts matters. The Pentagon's multi-vendor approach reduces reliance on any single company and signals how federal agencies are structuring AI access.
