Pentagon Signs AI Deals With Seven Tech Giants for Classified Military Operations
The U.S. Department of Defense has signed agreements with seven major technology companies to use their artificial intelligence tools in classified military operations, including mission planning and weapons targeting.
The companies are SpaceX (parent of AI lab xAI), OpenAI, Google, Nvidia, Reflection, Microsoft, and Amazon Web Services. The Pentagon said the deals will accelerate the military's shift toward AI-centric operations and strengthen soldiers' decision-making across all domains of warfare.
The agreements exclude Anthropic, one of the largest AI companies. The Pentagon classified Anthropic as a supply-chain threat last month and barred its software from use by the Defense Department and its contractors, following a dispute over how the military can deploy its AI systems.
What Operations Professionals Need to Know
These contracts represent a significant expansion of commercial AI into military decision-making. Operations teams working with government agencies should expect increased integration of these tools into planning cycles and tactical workflows.
The deals signal that the Pentagon views AI access as critical infrastructure for maintaining operational advantage. Organizations supporting defense operations may need to prepare for compatibility with these specific platforms.
Anthropic's exclusion underscores ongoing tensions between AI companies and the military over acceptable use cases. This friction could shape how other vendors structure their contracts with government clients in the future.
