Pony.ai Targets Sub-230,000 Yuan Robotaxi Price in 2027, Expands Autonomous Truck Operations
Pony.ai announced a 2027 robotaxi cost target of under 230,000 yuan-including vehicle, autonomous driving system, and battery-undercutting the starting price of a domestically built Tesla Model 3. The price reduction enables expansion into more Chinese cities and supports deployment of over 1,000 units internationally.
The company operates 1,400 robotaxis serving more than 1 million users across Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen. That user base has nearly tripled in a year.
Scaling Strategy and Geographic Expansion
Pony.ai is pursuing a dual-engine approach: scaling operations in Tier-1 cities while entering "New Tier-1" markets like Hangzhou and Changsha. The company also launched services and testing in Croatia and Singapore.
The company expects to operate in over 20 cities globally by 2026 with a fleet exceeding 3,000 vehicles. Toyota Bozhi 4X robotaxis-1,000 units planned for deployment-are undergoing fully unmanned testing ahead of commercial operations in major cities.
Autonomous Truck Operations and Cost Reductions
Pony.ai partnered with CATL to produce the first fully vehicle-grade, fully redundant L4 autonomous light truck. The truck shares the same urban navigation capabilities and L4 architecture as the robotaxi.
The light truck offers 18 cubic meters of cargo capacity-2.6 times that of low-speed delivery vehicles. Freight costs per kilometer run 40-50% lower than manual operations, with a 320-450 kilometer battery range suited for B2B logistics like express sorting and supermarket replenishment.
The truck operates at speeds up to 100 km/h with a fully redundant design rated for 600,000 kilometers or 20,000 hours of service.
Pony.ai also announced mass production of its fourth-generation L4 autonomous heavy truck, with cargo operations planned later this year on trunk routes and at ports. In April, the company secured China's first permit for unmanned cargo operations in autonomous truck platoons, enabling "1+N" unmanned convoys on routes like the Beijing-Tianjin Expressway.
