PSS Earns Two National Awards for Innovation in Digital Learning and AI Integration
The Public School System (PSS) has received two national awards recognizing its innovation in digital learning and artificial intelligence (AI) integration. These honors highlight the achievements of the Instructional Technology and Distance Education (ITDE) program, which is federally funded and dedicated to advancing education technology in public schools across Rota, Tinian, and Saipan.
By incorporating digital tools and AI, the PSS ITDE program expands learning opportunities and supports educators in adopting new approaches that enhance student engagement and achievement.
Recognitions and Leadership
The PSS ITDE Program, led by Director Dr. Lorraine Catienza, was awarded the Anthology Catalyst Award for Training and Professional Development. Additionally, ITDE Instructional Coach Dr. Riya Nathrani received the GenerationAI Luminary Award from ISTE-ASCD for her leadership in AI integration.
Commissioner of Education Dr. Lawrence F. Camacho praised the ITDE team for their dedication to empowering students and educators. He emphasized that these awards reflect the expertise and commitment within PSS to improve education through technology.
About the Anthology Catalyst Award
The Catalyst Award, presented by Anthology, recognizes organizations with impactful training initiatives. Since the 2009–2010 school year, the ITDE program has trained over 1,200 educators through its Educational Technology Training Program. Funded by the federal Consolidated Grant, it ensures equitable access to professional development across the three islands.
PSS was the first school district in the Pacific region to implement one-to-one computing via the OneLaptop Initiative, providing students with laptops to support digital learning. Today, teachers use platforms like Blackboard Learn to confidently integrate technology in their classrooms.
Dr. Catienza credited the recognition to collaboration across the PSS community, including EdTech staff, instructors, the Federal Programs Office, district leaders, and the Board of Education. She highlighted the vital role of EdTech teachers in sharing knowledge and inspiring others.
AI Integration and Ethical Use
Dr. Riya Nathrani earned the GenerationAI Luminary Award for her efforts in promoting responsible and effective AI use in education. She has developed AI-powered tools that produce localized and culturally relevant content for students in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI).
Her work supports multilingual learners by adapting materials, providing personalized feedback, and encouraging critical thinking about AI’s accuracy and cultural context. Dr. Nathrani also leads professional development sessions focused on best practices for AI integration, fact-checking, and flexible instruction for diverse classrooms.
She stated, “AI is more than just a tool — it’s a way to close gaps and bring equity to education. It helps us build content that reflects our students’ world while promoting critical thinking.”
