Roanoke College joins Google AI for Education Accelerator

Roanoke College has joined the Google AI for Education Accelerator, giving students, faculty, and staff free access to Google's AI training and Google Career Certificates. The partnership, announced August 18, 2026, is part of Google's commitment to provide every U.S. higher education institution with free access to its AI training programs.

The no-cost program is designed to support learning and workforce readiness. It aligns with Roanoke's goal of preparing students not just for their first job after graduation, but for adapting to shifting workforce demands throughout their careers.

What the training covers

Google's AI training teaches foundational AI skills, effective prompting techniques, and responsible AI usage. Students who complete the training will also learn how to use AI tools for practical tasks like building resumes and practicing job interviews.

Beyond the training, students, faculty, and staff can earn Google Career Certificates at no cost. These industry-recognized credentials cover in-demand fields including cybersecurity, information technology support, and data analytics. Google says the certificate program has helped more than one million people get training for higher-paying jobs.

For educators looking to apply similar tools in their own classrooms, Google's AI Learning Path for Teachers covers comparable ground on integrating AI into instruction. The broader AI for Education resources track developments in this area.

Why the partnership matters

"A Roanoke College liberal arts education already equips our learners with the skills to ask good questions and spot a bad answer when they see one," said Ryan King, chief of staff and innovation officer. "Pairing that with practical AI skills, at no cost, means our learners graduate knowing how to use these tools and when to question what they produce."

Lisa Gevelber, founder of Grow with Google, said the program builds on years of collaboration with universities. "Every student deserves access to the AI skills needed to succeed in today's job market," she said. "We are proud to partner with Roanoke College to provide students with our most advanced AI products and training, ensuring they know how to make the most of the technology in the classroom and beyond."

Why this matters for educators

For faculty, the practical takeaway is that AI fluency is becoming a baseline job skill rather than a specialization. The Roanoke model pairs critical thinking training with hands-on AI tool use - a combination that mirrors what employers increasingly expect from graduates. Faculty who integrate AI literacy into their teaching now will be preparing students for a job market where these skills are already standard.
