SAP extends HR chief's contract through 2030 as AI reshapes workforce strategy

SAP has extended Chief People Officer Gina Vargiu-Breuer's contract through January 2030, signaling the company's commitment to stable leadership as it rebuilds its workforce around artificial intelligence.

The April 10 announcement reflects SAP's decision to anchor workforce strategy at the executive level during a period of significant operational change. Vargiu-Breuer, who joined SAP's Executive Board in 2024 from Siemens Energy, will oversee how the company attracts, develops and manages talent in an AI-driven environment.

Pekka Ala-PietilΓ€, chairman of SAP's supervisory board, said Vargiu-Breuer had "optimised processes in recruitment, development and management" and would guide the company's transition into the AI era.

Workforce strategy moves from support to strategy

The contract extension reflects a broader shift across enterprise software companies. Organizations face pressure to redesign how they operate, make decisions and deliver value as AI adoption accelerates.

Vargiu-Breuer said the transformation "extends beyond technology to how we operate." Her team will continue driving organizational change and value creation as SAP restructures its operating model.

SAP is consolidating customer-facing functions under a new Customer Value Group and strengthening regional execution with leadership appointments across Southeast Asia. The company is also investing in SAP Labs across Asia to expand AI-driven product engineering.

The skills gap problem

SAP's workforce focus aligns with industry data showing a critical mismatch. According to IDC research, 94% of enterprises view AI skills as critical, but only about one-third consider their workforce ready for AI work.

McKinsey found that 46% of leaders cite skill gaps as a major barrier to AI adoption. These gaps are pushing companies to prioritize reskilling, organizational redesign and new operating models alongside technology deployment.

SAP Labs East Asia in Singapore is partnering with the Infocomm Media Development Authority to train 50 AI specialists over three years, focusing on generative AI and machine learning.

What this signals for executives

SAP's decision positions workforce strategy as a core business driver, not a support function. The four-year contract extension signals confidence that talent alignment, organizational structure and execution capability will determine how effectively the company translates AI strategy into sustained growth.

For executives managing similar transformations, the move underscores a practical reality: technology deployment alone won't deliver results without matching changes to how people work, where skills gaps exist, and how organizations are structured.
