Sekolah Rakyat Principals Retreat Introduces AI Technology

Jakarta – Forty-seven principals from Sekolah Rakyat recently took part in the second phase of a retreat focused on integrating artificial intelligence (AI) technology into education leadership. This initiative supports Sekolah Rakyat’s mission to improve educational access and reduce poverty across Indonesia through a free education program.

During the retreat, Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf explained that AI tools are being introduced to help principals better assess and map the potential of both students and teachers. This approach allows school leaders to identify strengths more effectively, ensuring tailored support for their communities.

Innovative Curriculum and Affirmative Policy

The Sekolah Rakyat curriculum includes a unique module that permits students to bypass traditional academic tests, requiring only administrative and health checks. This flexibility supports students from disadvantaged backgrounds, particularly those in the lowest 10 percent income bracket, known as decile 1.

The second phase of the retreat took place from July 2 to July 7, 2025, at the Social Welfare Education and Training Center and the 1/Faletehan Air Defense Regiment in South Jakarta. Participants were experienced state civil servants selected through a rigorous process to become principals of Sekolah Rakyat schools.

Preparing for Nationwide Impact

This retreat is a critical step in preparing Sekolah Rakyat to serve up to 20,000 students from beneficiary families of the KPM program nationwide this year. The program’s affirmative policy targets the most vulnerable communities to ensure equitable educational opportunities.

The first phase of the retreat, conducted from June 16 to June 20, 2025, involved 52 principals who received training on Sekolah Rakyat’s introduction, character building, and discipline development.

As of June 22, construction of Sekolah Rakyat school buildings had reached 61.78% completion, with expected finalization by July 8, 2025.

Why This Matters for Educators

  • AI technology enables more precise identification of student and teacher potential, supporting targeted interventions.
  • The curriculum’s flexibility removes traditional academic barriers, allowing students from low-income families to access education more easily.
  • The retreat equips principals with leadership skills and knowledge to manage innovative education programs effectively.
