Simply Business embeds ChatGPT into insurance discovery, shifting where customer journeys begin

Simply Business has launched a business insurance app inside ChatGPT for US and UK users, allowing small business owners to get indicative pricing for key covers before being directed to complete a full quote on its platform.

The integration connects ChatGPT to Simply Business's pricing engine. Users enter basic business details and receive a guide price within the chat interface. The app sits in OpenAI's App Directory and surfaces when users ask questions about business insurance or risk.

This represents a shift in how AI for Insurance is being deployed. Rather than using generative AI solely for internal efficiency-claims processing, underwriting support, customer service-insurers are now testing it as a customer-facing distribution channel.

A new front door for insurance discovery

Small business owners increasingly use generative AI tools for research and decision-making, including early-stage insurance queries. They're less likely to start on broker websites or comparison platforms.

That creates a potential new entry point for insurance distribution: conversational interfaces where pricing becomes the first meaningful interaction, potentially sidelining the retail broker's role in initial discovery.

Simply Business is using ChatGPT as a discovery layer that feeds into its existing marketplace of insurers, rather than attempting to handle the full quote-and-bind process inside the chatbot.

What this means for brokers

The development raises a practical question: where does customer acquisition actually begin? If guide pricing and product discovery shift into AI assistants, brokers risk becoming later-stage participants-engaged after customers have already formed expectations around price and cover.

SME insurance has long been price-sensitive and digitally driven, so conversational AI may accelerate existing trends rather than fundamentally reshape the market overnight.

The more immediate concern is visibility. Brokers and traditional intermediaries need presence in AI-led discovery environments. How carrier appetite and pricing data surfaces within those environments will matter.

Still early-stage, not a replacement

Simply Business's model remains top-of-funnel. Users complete applications, underwriting, and binding on the broker's own platform, not within ChatGPT.

Across the sector, generative AI is being tested as a discovery and engagement layer, not as a replacement for regulated insurance distribution infrastructure. Aviva and other carriers have discussed AI applications in customer service and operational efficiency, but most activity remains experimental with limited deployment into core distribution.

As more insurers and intermediaries experiment with similar integrations, the sector will continue working through questions around data control, customer ownership, and the broker's role in AI-mediated insurance journeys.
