SK Telecom to Build Military AI Model With South Korea's Defense Ministry
SK Telecom and South Korea's Ministry of Defense have signed a partnership to develop an AI model designed specifically for military applications. The effort is part of a government program aimed at building homegrown AI technologies independent of foreign systems.
Under the agreement, the two organizations will develop and test a defense-specialized AI model based on SK Telecom's existing foundation model. They will also work together to collect and use open defense-related data for training.
The defense ministry's project received backing from a state-run program that allocates GPU resources for high-performance AI development. The ministry plans to begin work on a lightweight version of the model in the second quarter.
Timeline and Testing
The lightweight model will undergo pilot testing within the defense sector before being refined further. Additional training using defense-specific data will follow the initial testing phase.
SK Telecom was selected as one of four finalists for the national project based on its hyperscale AI model, A.X K1.
Broader Strategy
The partnership reflects South Korea's broader push to develop what officials call "sovereign" AI models. The science ministry is directing the initiative to accelerate the country's AI adoption and strengthen its competitive position globally.
For development teams, the project signals government investment in military-grade AI infrastructure and demonstrates how foundation models are being adapted for specialized domains beyond consumer applications.
