Spotify launches AI remix tool with royalties built in

Spotify and Universal Music Group will soon offer Premium subscribers a paid add-on to create AI-generated covers and remixes of licensed songs. Artists and songwriters can opt in to earn royalties when fans use their work in these creations.

The tool represents a shift in how streaming platforms approach generative AI. Rather than restricting the technology, Spotify is building a licensing model that compensates rights holders directly. The system operates on three principles: consent from artists, credit to original creators, and compensation through royalties.

How it works for artists

Artists decide whether to participate. Those who opt in receive payment when fans create remixes or covers using their songs. Spotify handles the rights management and payment processing within the platform itself.

Lucian Grainge, chairman and CEO of Universal Music Group, said the initiative "brings artists and fans closer together" while supporting human creativity. He emphasized the tool is "firmly artist-centric" and rooted in responsible AI practices.

What this means for marketers

For marketing professionals, this opens a new channel for artist promotion and fan engagement. Fan-created content becomes a discovery mechanism-remixes can introduce songs to audiences who might not encounter them otherwise. Artists gain an additional revenue stream beyond streaming royalties.

The move also signals how AI for marketing is evolving in the music industry. Rather than replacing human creativity, platforms are positioning AI as a tool that amplifies fan participation and deepens artist-fan relationships.

Part of a broader strategy

Spotify announced in October that it was collaborating with Sony Music Group, Warner Music Group, Merlin, and Believe to develop AI tools that support rather than compete with artists. That effort included plans for a dedicated generative AI research lab and product team.

The remix tool is the first major public product from those partnerships. It demonstrates how licensing agreements can be structured to make generative AI commercially viable for all parties-platforms, rights holders, and fans.
