Master’s in Artificial Intelligence at Auckland University Sees Student Numbers Triple

The University of Auckland’s Master of Artificial Intelligence programme is rapidly growing. Since its launch last year, enrolments have more than tripled—from about 30 students in 2024 to around 100 this year.

Dr Thomas Lacombe, the programme’s director, explained that most students come from science backgrounds, but there are also participants from other disciplines. Additionally, 10 to 15 students are professionals who are currently working full-time and pursuing the degree to enhance their AI skills for career advancement.

Programme Structure and Career Paths

The Master's programme offers a balanced curriculum that includes technical AI training, ethics, academic research, and practical applications of AI in business. This prepares students for a variety of roles that are either newly emerging or evolving within the AI field.

Dr Lacombe noted the difficulty in predicting exact career outcomes for graduates since many AI job roles are still being created or transformed. However, typical career paths include:

  • AI and machine learning engineering roles
  • Positions developing new AI tools or algorithms
  • Applying AI solutions in specific industries to solve practical problems
  • Academic research roles, including pursuing PhDs in AI

Hands-On Learning Through Hackathons

Earlier this month, students participated in a weekend hackathon, working in small groups to create AI tools addressing real-world challenges faced by researchers and universities. One project focused on helping researchers complete grant application forms more efficiently, improving their chances of success.

Nick Kearns from the university’s Research and Innovation Office mentioned that the university plans to support the ongoing development of these AI tools by the students.
