Society Calls on Students to Build Practical AI Solutions for Societal Challenges

The Society for Women Engineers (SWE) has emphasized the need for students at every level to apply their knowledge of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in developing practical solutions that address real societal issues. This message was delivered during an innovation lab session in Abuja titled “AI for All - Practical Session,” organized by SWE in partnership with American Spaces and SWEBaze University.

Stella Dennis, Programme Director of SWE, highlighted the importance of equipping students, educators, and young professionals with hands-on AI skills. She pointed out that our society is increasingly technology-driven and requires innovative AI solutions to solve ongoing challenges.

“The world is now a global village facing numerous real-world problems. We need timely, innovative AI solutions. After this session, I expect participants to continue developing relevant and practical solutions that address societal needs,” Dennis said.

Targeting All Educational Levels with STEM Integration

The initiative focuses on university students, as well as primary and secondary school learners and educators. Participants were introduced to AI, robotics, and cybersecurity as part of a broader STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education approach.

“Our goal is to train participants to create their own solutions. They will also learn how to respond effectively to cybersecurity threats like malware and cyber intrusions. For us, STEM is a practical tool for solving real problems,” Dennis added.

Government Support for Ethical AI Development

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) reaffirmed the government’s commitment to responsible and ethical AI development. Kashifu Abdullahi, Director-General of NITDA, was represented by Mr. Abdullahi Abubakar from the Policy and Regulatory Department.

NITDA has developed a national AI strategy aimed at leveraging Nigeria’s young population and abundant talent to establish the country as a leading AI hub in Africa. “We are not only regulating AI but also developing AI tools and coordinating efforts among multiple stakeholders. Our goal is responsible AI use across academia, private sectors, and public institutions for the benefit of all Nigerians,” Abubakar stated.

He also commended SWE for its focus on empowering women and youth through technology.

Preparing for the AI-Driven Job Market

Ololade Okobi, Chairperson of SWE, emphasized that AI is already influencing the present and urged Nigerians to embrace AI technologies. She encouraged developing relevant digital skills to stay relevant in the changing job environment.

“AI won’t eliminate jobs; it will transform them. People must upskill to remain competitive. The global economy won’t wait for Nigeria, so we must adapt and move forward,” Okobi said.

Educators can support this by integrating practical AI skills in curricula and encouraging students to build solutions that respond to local and global challenges.
