Taiwan offers to share AI development strategies with APEC economies
Taiwan's trade delegation told other Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation members last week that it will share its approach to building AI infrastructure, particularly for small and medium-sized businesses.
The delegation, led by trade negotiator Yang Jen-ni, attended the 32nd APEC trade ministers' meeting in Suzhou, China. Taiwan's Office of Trade Negotiations said Monday that APEC members agreed digital trade and AI are now key drivers of regional economic growth.
What Taiwan is offering
Taiwan has deployed AI to help traditional industries modernize and improve competitiveness. The country's customs agency uses AI to flag high-risk goods and speed up clearance processing.
The delegation also proposed sharing Taiwan's experience with green economic transformation. Taiwan created a "Green Trade Information Website" to connect foreign buyers with Taiwanese companies and help them source sustainable products for global markets.
Supply chain resilience and digital trade
APEC members raised concerns about supply chain disruptions from wars, shipping blockades, and export restrictions. Taiwan and other members agreed to pursue market-oriented policies and regional economic integration to strengthen supply chain resilience.
Taiwan called on APEC members to monitor market-distortion practices and non-market policies tied to industrial strategies. The country urged greater transparency to maintain fair competition.
Most APEC members support a permanent exemption from tariffs on electronic transmissions to reduce digital trade costs. Taiwan encouraged continued monitoring of this issue with a long-term, predictable approach.
