Tennessee Tech professor named NSF AI education fellow

William Eberle, a computer science professor at Tennessee Tech University, has been selected for the National Science Foundation's inaugural cohort of National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource AI Education Fellows. The NSF chose 25 faculty leaders from 23 states for the program.

Eberle, co-director of Tech's Machine Intelligence and Data Science Center, will serve as a national ambassador for AI development. Through the NAIRR Pilot program, fellows assist instructors with integrating AI tools and resources into their classrooms.

The selection arrives as Tennessee Tech prepares to launch a new bachelor's degree in artificial intelligence this fall. The program focuses on the systems and development behind AI, replacing the previous data science and AI concentration within the computer science major.

Eberle brings nearly four decades of combined academic and industry experience to the role. He has taught at Tennessee Tech for more than 18 years, instructing courses in data science, AI, and software engineering. Before joining the university, he spent 18 years in industry, including eight years developing AI and machine learning models for inconsistency detection in telecommunications.

"I am truly honored and humbled by being selected for this fellowship," Eberle said. "I hope that I can learn from the other fellows some of the best practices when it comes to AI education and then enable Tennessee Tech to be a leader in the AI community."

Eberle sees the fellowship as a way to raise Tennessee Tech's profile nationally. "By promoting AI across the campus," he said, "this will not only help the local academic community but also allow Tennessee Tech to drive the national discourse on AI education."
