Thailand Launches Medical AI Data Platform to Improve Diagnosis

The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation has introduced the Medical AI Data Platform, a central digital infrastructure that uses artificial intelligence to speed up medical diagnosis and reduce healthcare gaps across Thailand. The launch was announced by Minister Supamas Isarabhakdi at a seminar in Bangkok.

The platform includes over 2.2 million anonymised medical images spanning eight key disease categories: thoracic diseases, breast cancer, eye diseases, abdominal issues, skin diseases, stroke, osteoporosis, and bone disorders. These images train AI models that assist doctors, especially in underserved areas.

Collaboration Across Leading Medical Institutions

Currently, the Medical AI Consortium includes six major organisations:

  • Department of Medical Services
  • Mahidol University’s Faculty of Medicine at Ramathibodi Hospital
  • Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Medicine
  • Prince of Songkla University’s Faculty of Medicine
  • Chiang Mai University’s Faculty of Medicine
  • Navamindradhiraj University’s Faculty of Medicine at Vajira Hospital

The ministry encourages more medical institutions, universities, and researchers to join this AI ecosystem to further develop and strengthen Thailand’s healthcare system.

Platform Features and Security Standards

The platform was developed by the National Electronics and Computer Technology Centre (Nectec), part of the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA). It meets national data security and cloud standards, ensuring secure and standardised AI development. The Department of Medical Services, under the Ministry of Public Health, oversees its operation.

There are three main components of the platform:

  • Data Management: RadiiView, a software and cloud app for medical image annotation, enables doctors to mark key features, creating high-quality datasets for AI training.
  • AI Modelling: The NomadML platform supports AI model development using annotated data. It integrates with NSTDA’s supercomputer to speed up processing and training.
  • AI Service Deployment: Validated AI models are deployed in real healthcare settings to assist physicians directly.

This platform offers a practical foundation for scalable AI applications in healthcare, helping to improve diagnosis accuracy and accessibility throughout Thailand.
