Tufts study finds 9 million U.S. jobs at risk from AI displacement within five years

A Tufts University study predicts AI will displace over 9 million U.S. workers within five years, costing up to $1.5 trillion in household income. High-paying tech and finance roles face the greatest risk; manual trade jobs remain largely unaffected.

9 Million Jobs Face AI Displacement Within Five Years, Tufts Study Finds

Researchers at Tufts University have ranked nearly 800 occupations by their vulnerability to artificial intelligence, identifying 33 "tipping point" jobs most likely to be displaced in the next two to five years. The study predicts more than 9 million American workers could lose their jobs to AI, representing $200 billion to $1.5 trillion in lost household income.

The American AI Jobs Risk Index assigns exposure scores to each occupation, revealing a pattern that defies conventional wisdom: the highest-paid jobs face the greatest risk.

High-Wage Jobs Face the Steepest Risk

Computer programmers, web developers, and financial planners top the list of occupations most exposed to AI displacement. Data scientists, database architects, and information security analysts also rank among the 10 most vulnerable roles.

The index includes authors and journalists-occupations that rely on knowledge work and written communication, precisely the cognitive tasks AI systems now handle.

Bhaskar Chakravorti, dean of global business at Tufts, said the threat extends beyond routine work. "AI is not just automating routine tasks - it is moving up, targeting the cognitive and analytical work that defines high-skill, high-wage careers," he said in a statement.

Manual Work Remains Largely Untouched

Workers in physical trades face minimal displacement risk. Roofers, miners, machine operators, meat packers, welders, and stonemasons experience less than one percent exposure to AI replacement.

The report notes this outcome with stark clarity: "The occupations AI cannot touch are largely those the economy has always undervalued."

Geography Matters in Workforce Planning

Urban centers and university towns face the highest concentration of AI-vulnerable jobs. This geographic concentration creates immediate implications for state and local workforce policy.

Chakravorti flagged a brewing conflict between local and federal policy. "The states and metros most at risk are already the most active in seeking AI regulation - and the federal government is telling them to stand down," he said. "That collision will define the economic and political landscape of the next decade."

What Survives in an AI-Driven Workforce

Workers who combine subject-matter expertise with critical thinking and AI literacy will remain competitive, according to the researchers. The implication for HR professionals is direct: your organization's talent strategy must account for rapid occupational obsolescence.

For HR leaders, this means rethinking recruitment, retention, and development programs. Learn how to prepare your workforce for this shift through AI for Human Resources or explore strategic guidance with the AI Learning Path for CHROs.
