UAE Deploys Autonomous AI to Fast-Track Work Permits

The United Arab Emirates will begin using artificial intelligence to automatically approve or reject work-permit applications starting 1 May 2026. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) announced the system on 5 May, making the UAE the first country to deploy fully autonomous decision-making at national scale for labour-market admissions.

The AI platform cross-checks qualifications, professional licences and salary data against a live database of skills shortages. Straightforward cases receive approval in hours instead of the weeks required under manual review. Applications flagged for credential mismatches, employer-compliance issues or other risks go to human examiners.

Who Benefits Most

Employers in information technology, healthcare and advanced manufacturing are expected to see the largest gains. Early adopters report approval notices within 24 hours.

MOHRE says the system will improve transparency and reduce administrative costs for government and employers alike.

What HR Teams Need to Do Now

Data quality is now critical. The AI will reject applications with incomplete or inconsistent job-title mappings immediately, and employers may face cooling-off periods before resubmission.

HR teams should audit job-description libraries, salary benchmarks and degree-verification vendors before the May 2026 deadline. Ensure that job titles, compensation data and educational credentials are consistent across all internal systems and match what will appear in permit applications.

The system also integrates robotics for document scanning and biometric capture at immigration centres, moving the UAE toward a paperless process by 2027.

Privacy and Oversight

Privacy advocates have called for stronger safeguards under the 2022 Personal Data Protection Law. MOHRE says the platform's algorithms are audited for bias and accuracy, though details on the audit process remain limited.

For HR professionals managing international mobility programmes, the shift means front-loading compliance work. Incomplete applications will now trigger automatic rejections rather than requests for additional information.
