Uber Expands Beyond Rides With Hotels, AI Voice Bookings
Uber announced hotel bookings, AI-powered reservations, and shopping features at its annual Go-Get event in New York on Wednesday, pushing the ride-hailing company deeper into travel services.
The moves position Uber as a broader travel platform rather than solely a transportation service. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said the company wants to be "the first app that you open when you get into your city" and handle the entire trip experience.
Hotel Bookings Put Uber in Direct Competition
Uber is partnering with Expedia Group to offer more than 700,000 hotel options to U.S. users. The company plans to add home rentals through Vrbo later this year.
A new hotel icon in the Uber app lets users filter accommodations by price, ratings, and amenities. Uber One members receive a 20% discount on select hotels and 10% back in Uber One credits.
This directly challenges established players like Booking Holdings and Airbnb in the travel booking space.
AI Voice Tool Handles Reservations
Uber is rolling out an AI voice chatbot powered by OpenAI models that lets users book rides through spoken commands. The feature demonstrates the company's broader push to embed artificial intelligence across its platform.
Earlier this year, Uber Eats launched an AI cart assistant for grocery delivery and added AI-powered menu descriptions. The company uses AI tools from external providers and its own internal systems.
New Travel Features Extend Beyond Hotels
Uber One members can now earn ride credits and $0 delivery fees when traveling abroad, with rewards applied upon returning to the U.S. The app will curate points of interest and tourist hotspots for travelers.
The company is launching room service delivery for forgotten travel essentials like toothbrushes. Customers booking Uber Black or Black SUV rides can also add Uber Eats items-including coffee-for drivers to pick up along the way. The service launches in Atlanta, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, San Diego, San Francisco, and Austin over the coming weeks.
Shopping Without the App
Uber is adding a shopping feature that extends beyond stores currently listed on its platform. Users can send photos and details to a personal shopper, who retrieves items from retail locations and charges the store's price.
Broader Diversification Strategy
The announcements reflect Uber's ongoing expansion into autonomous vehicles, freight, chauffeur services, grocery delivery, and air taxi partnerships with Joby Aviation. The company is betting that bundling services across transportation, food, lodging, and shopping will increase user engagement and retention.
