UK Government to Deploy AI Legal Assistants in Crown Courts

The UK government is developing artificial intelligence legal assistants to handle routine casework in Crown courts, with trials set to begin in controlled environments. The assistants will perform research and case analysis work, reducing administrative burden on judges and lawyers.

Deputy Prime Minister and Lord Chancellor David Lammy announced the initiative at London Tech Week. The government will partner with legal experts and AI developers to establish transparent standards for safe and ethical use during the pilot phase.

Beyond legal assistants, judges will use AI to identify cases ready for trial and group similar proceedings together. This approach aims to optimize use of judicial, prosecutorial, and court resources to resolve cases faster.

Probation and Immigration Systems Already Using AI Tools

All probation officers now have access to Justice Transcribe, an AI transcription tool expected to save 18,750 calendar days of work. A similar transcription tool is being piloted in Immigration and Asylum Tribunals.

These projects are part of Prime Minister Keir Starmer's AI Exemplars program, which identifies high-impact uses of AI across government.

Legal Sector Gets New Framework for AI Testing

The government launched AI Growth Labs this week to allow controlled development of AI products in the legal technology sector. The Solicitors Regulation Authority, Council for Licensed Conveyancers, Information Commissioner's Office, and Legal Services Board will oversee the initiative.

The SRA said the lab will accelerate progress in legal services, from debt recovery tools for small businesses to consumer-facing systems that simplify legal processes. The Law Society of England and Wales noted the lab will let legal service providers test AI tools against current professional standards without compromising trust in the profession.
