The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff is integrating AI-powered agents into its student success operations, following insights from the Element451 Engage Summit '26 in Charlotte, N.C. The move signals how regional public universities are adopting automation to boost enrollment and retention while preserving personal connections.

Chris Riggins, interim vice chancellor for Enrollment Management and Student Success, and Joshua Strong, interim director of publications for Enrollment Management and Student Success, attended the three-day conference hosted by Element451, a customer relationship management platform UAPB recently implemented to support recruitment, enrollment, and student success. The summit drew higher education professionals from across the country to discuss emerging technologies and communication strategies aimed at improving the student journey.

The Agentic Campus vision

A central theme was the "Agentic Campus," an approach that uses AI-powered agents to assist students throughout their educational experience. The summit's focus on these agents reflects the rise of AI Agents & Automation in higher education. These digital assistants can answer questions, provide guidance, complete routine tasks, and help students navigate enrollment-related processes more efficiently.

"AI should be used throughout the entire student success journey, from prospect to graduation," Riggins said. "When implemented strategically, AI can help institutions engage students earlier, communicate more effectively, remove barriers to enrollment and persistence, and provide timely support at every stage of the student lifecycle. At UAPB, we view AI as a tool that enhances our ability to serve students while maintaining the personal connections that are essential to their success."

Early wins with data and targeted communications

UAPB is still in the early stages of using Element451, but the platform is already delivering more accurate attendance data from events like Lion Fever Day and New Student Orientation. That data enables targeted communications based on student engagement, Strong said. "As we expand its capabilities, AI-powered agents will be able to support students around the clock through calls, texts and chat platforms."

Strong's vision includes developing specialized agents for admissions, financial aid, housing, and student success so prospective students receive timely guidance. "The insights gained through Element451's Engage Summit are helping us enhance the student experience, strengthen enrollment efforts and support UAPB's goal of reaching 3,000 students and beyond," he said. This perspective aligns with growing interest in AI for Education.

Why this matters for Education professionals

UAPB's approach shows that even a smaller public university can start with basic data collection and build toward 24/7 AI-powered student support without losing the human touch. The key is tying technology to specific enrollment and retention goals, not deploying automation for its own sake. For enrollment managers and student success teams, the takeaway is clear: incremental AI adoption that enhances personal advising-rather than replacing it-can strengthen the entire student lifecycle from inquiry to graduation.
