University of Pretoria Leads South Africa in AI Research
The University of Pretoria (UP) has been recognised as South Africa’s top institution for artificial intelligence (AI) research, according to a recent analysis by EduRank. This distinction reflects UP’s growing influence in AI scholarship and its commitment to research excellence, interdisciplinary collaboration, and innovation that delivers societal benefits.
The ranking evaluated more than 61,200 academic papers and 969,000 citations from 24 South African universities. UP holds the 532nd position globally and ranks second across Africa based on AI research output and impact.
Leadership and Vision in AI Research
Professor Sunil Maharaj, UP’s vice-principal for research, innovation, and postgraduate education, highlighted the significance of this achievement. He stated, “This ranking confirms UP’s role as a leader in developing AI technologies that are impactful, ethical and relevant.” UP’s research community actively contributes to shaping AI development both within Africa and internationally.
Strategic Funding Boosts AI Research Capacity
UP’s AI efforts have been further strengthened by new international funding awarded to Professor Vukosi Marivate. Holding the ABSA-UP Chair of Data Science in the Department of Computer Science, Professor Marivate focuses on African-led AI research in critical sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, climate resilience, and language technology.
This funding supports the development of AI systems tailored to African contexts, including tools for processing underrepresented languages and generating data insights relevant to local challenges. It also fosters postgraduate training and collaborative projects aimed at cultivating the next generation of African AI experts.
Professor Marivate emphasised the local focus, saying, “We are committed to ensuring that AI solutions emerging from Africa are shaped by African priorities.” He noted that this support boosts research capacity and creates tools with tangible community impact.
Collaboration and Societal Impact
UP’s AI projects often involve partnerships with industry, cross-faculty collaborations, and engagement with policymakers to maximise societal benefit. Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Francis Petersen pointed out that the new ranking and increased funding reflect UP’s mission.
“We aim to be a thought leader in areas that matter most to society,” said Professor Petersen. He added that UP’s AI research demonstrates how the university delivers solutions that are globally competitive while remaining deeply relevant to Africa’s development.
