Utah Schools Adopt Google's Gemini for Education With Data Privacy Controls
Google's Gemini AI assistant will now be available in Utah schools through a program designed to keep student data private and under local control. Matt Winters, the Utah State Board of Education's AI specialist, said Gemini for Education operates in a "school-managed environment" to assist both teachers and students.
Unlike the public version of Gemini available in Chrome browsers, this education version does not use student data to train other AI systems. School districts maintain full control over the information collected.
Student and Parent Reactions Mixed
Students expressed both enthusiasm and concern about the tool. One student saw it as a quick reference for homework help. Another worried that relying on AI could weaken research skills and critical thinking about information sources.
Parents raised questions about safety and accuracy. Winters said the program ensures "the data stays with Utah schools, Utah students" and operates under state law and district oversight.
Local Control Remains With Districts
School districts, charter schools, and other local education agencies can choose whether to adopt Gemini for Education. Winters emphasized that local organizations understand their communities better than state officials and should decide what works best for their students, teachers, and parents.
The rollout reflects a broader approach to AI in education that prioritizes district autonomy over mandated adoption. Educators interested in understanding how AI tools like Gemini function in classrooms can explore AI Learning Path for Teachers or review resources on AI for Education.
