Zebra and Aiva Partner to Cut Nurses' Administrative Work

Zebra Technologies has integrated Aiva Health's voice-controlled AI assistant into its hospital devices, aiming to reduce the time nurses spend on documentation and administrative tasks. The collaboration puts voice commands at the bedside, allowing clinicians to document patient care, submit work orders, and access policies without stopping their work.

Hospitals face persistent staffing shortages and mounting administrative burden. Nurses spend significant time entering data into electronic health records, submitting requests, and navigating multiple systems - time that could go to patient care instead.

How the technology works

Aiva's Nurse Assistant integrates with Zebra's mobile computers and wearable badges designed for clinical environments. Nurses can speak commands to document directly into Epic and Oracle Health systems, submit work orders through ServiceNow, access clinical policies, and launch interpretation services from providers like LanguageLine.

The devices are built for hospital conditions: durability, security, and low-latency responses that work even when clinicians are gloved or mid-procedure. The goal is to eliminate the friction of typing, tapping, or switching between screens.

The staffing problem

Sumeet Bhatia, Aiva's founder and CEO, said hospitals have focused on streamlining physician workflows while adding systems that burden nurses. "With Aiva and Zebra, hospitals can dramatically reduce the administrative burden of nurses too, while also improving patient experience and cutting costs," he said.

Reducing time spent on routine tasks allows care teams to focus on complex cases and higher-value work. It also addresses a critical issue: administrative overload contributes to nurse burnout and workforce attrition.

What this means for operations

Zebra's framework, called Orchestrated Care, emphasizes giving teams visibility, information, and communication tools when they need them. Hands-free workflows reduce interruptions and keep clinicians moving through fast-paced environments without breaking focus.

Faster administrative responses and more time at the bedside can improve patient experience directly. When nurses spend less time on paperwork, they spend more time on care.
