AI agent for students

Code Reuse and Citation Check Agent

A submission where every borrowed block is either cited, rewritten or removed, according to the course rules

Code Reuse and Citation Check Agent: what goes in, what the agent does and what you get

What it does

A student copies a snippet from a tutorial during a late night and forgets to cite it. This agent reads the course integrity rules first, so it knows what must be cited, what is allowed and what is shared team code. It then compares the submission against known sources such as pasted snippets, public tutorials and files from the student's own team repository, and lists blocks that look copied. For each block it suggests citation, rewriting or removal depending on the rules. After each rewrite it checks again, so a rewrite that is still too close is caught. The student decides what to cite and submits. Edge case: a standard pattern such as a bubble sort is marked common knowledge, not flagged as copied.

How it works

Follow the arrows from top to bottom. The orange dashed arrow is the loop: when a check fails, the agent goes back and tries again.

Read the steps as a list
  1. Student requests a citation check before submitting
  2. Read the course integrity rules and allowed sources
  3. Compare the code against tutorials, snippets and team repository files
  4. List blocks that closely match a source
  5. Is each match more than a standard pattern? If not: mark it as common knowledge and remove it from the list. Back to step 3.
  6. Suggest cite, rewrite or remove for each remaining block
  7. Student chooses an action for each blockThe agent waits here for your OK.
  8. Re-run the comparison after the changes
  9. Does any block still match too closely? If not: explain what still matches and suggest a clearer rewrite or citation. Back to step 6.
  10. Citation report for the student's records

How it decides

A block is flagged when it closely matches an outside or team source and is not a standard textbook pattern. The rules decide whether it needs citation or rewriting.

  • Flag blocks over 8 lines that match an outside source closely
  • Treat textbook-standard algorithms as common knowledge
  • Require citation for any snippet copied with changes
  • Flag team code that is not marked as shared in the assignment

Make it yours

Every agent is a starting point. You choose these settings for your own situation.

  • Minimum block length to flag (default 8 lines)
  • Which sources to compare against
  • Citation style (comment, README, reference list)
  • Whether team code is allowed in the assignment

What keeps you in control

It always asks you first

  • The student's choice for each flagged block
  • Final submission, done by the student

Hard limits

  • Does not accuse; it only lists matches for the student to decide on
  • Never rewrites the code for the student

It stops when

  • Done: no flagged block remains uncited or unresolved
  • Stop: the course rules cannot be found

An example run

What happensThe agent found a 14-line function that matched a public tutorial on binary search and a 9-line block identical to a teammate's file. The tutorial match was cited by the student. The teammate block was not allowed under the rules, so the student rewrote it. The rerun still found a similar variable layout, so the agent suggested renaming and restructuring. The second rerun came back clean.
