Opinion Cite and Quote Verification Agent

A final opinion where every citation and quotation matches its source.

Opinion Cite and Quote Verification Agent: what goes in, what the agent does and what you get

What it does

A wrong pin cite or misquote in a final opinion damages credibility. Checking each one is slow work done in the last days before release. This agent extracts every citation and quotation from the draft and checks each against the source text and the record. It flags wrong page numbers, altered quotes and misdescribed holdings. After corrections it rechecks every item, because a changed sentence can alter a nearby cite. The clerk approves changes and the judge signs. Edge case: a quote from the record omits a word that changes meaning, so the agent flags it with both versions.

How it works

Follow the arrows from top to bottom. The orange dashed arrow is the loop: when a check fails, the agent goes back and tries again.

How it decides

It marks a citation wrong when the page, volume or year does not match the source. It marks a quotation wrong when any word differs from the source text.

  • Flag any quote with a word difference
  • Flag a pin cite that does not contain the cited point
  • Flag a record cite to a missing page
  • Apply the court's citation style

It stops when

An example run

What happensAn opinion has 48 citations and 17 quotes. The agent finds 3 wrong pin cites, 1 altered quote that drops the word "not" and 1 record cite to the wrong exhibit page. The clerk fixes all five. On the recheck, one fixed cite pointed to a page that does not support the point. The clerk reworks the sentence and the judge signs.
