AI agent for competitive intelligence analysts
Patent and Technology Signal Agent
Deliver a monthly short list of technology clusters that matter, each explained with citations.
What it does
Patent offices and research sites publish thousands of items each month, and nobody can read them all. Once a month the agent searches patent and paper feeds for each tracked competitor and topic. It removes duplicates such as the same invention filed in several countries, then groups the remaining filings into clusters by subject. For each cluster it asks whether it matters to the company's products, using the product list and roadmap themes. If a cluster is unclear, it searches again with narrower terms or the inventor names. Clusters that matter get a short plain-language explanation with citations. The analyst reviews everything before it is shared. Edge case: a competitor files many patents in one area to block others, which is a defensive filing and not a real product signal. The agent flags that pattern for the analyst to judge.
How it works
Follow the arrows from top to bottom. The orange dashed arrow is the loop: when a check fails, the agent goes back and tries again.
Read the steps as a list
- Monthly run begins
- Search patent and paper feeds for tracked competitors and topics
- Remove duplicate and family filings
- Group filings into clusters by subject
- Is each cluster clear enough to name and describe? If not: re-search with narrower terms or inventor names and regroup. Back to step 2.
- Rate each cluster's relevance to company products
- Pull citations and filing dates for relevant clusters
- Write a short plain-language explanation per cluster
- Does every claim in the explanation match a cited filing? If not: correct the explanation or remove the claim. Back to step 8.
- Analyst reviews the briefing before circulationThe agent waits here for your OK.
- Monthly technology briefing sent
How it decides
A cluster matters when it overlaps a product area and has several filings or a fast-growing filing rate. Unclear clusters are searched again before being kept or dropped.
- Treat family filings in several countries as one invention
- Keep a cluster when it has at least 3 filings in 6 months and overlaps a product area
- Flag clusters of many narrow filings as possible defensive filings
- Re-search once before dropping an unclear cluster
Make it yours
Every agent is a starting point. You choose these settings for your own situation.
- Competitors and topics to watch
- Minimum filings to form a cluster (default 3)
- Time window (default 6 months)
- Product areas that count as relevant
- Who receives the briefing
What keeps you in control
It always asks you first
- Analyst reviews the briefing before circulation
- Analyst approves adding new tracked topics
Hard limits
- Do not give legal opinions on infringement
- Cite every claim to a filing or paper
It stops when
- Done: briefing approved and sent
- Stop: search access fails, report the gap and keep last month's briefing
