Pathology Result Follow-up Agent

Every pathology result reviewed and acted on

Pathology Result Follow-up Agent: what goes in, what the agent does and what you get

What it does

Every specimen sent to pathology needs its result reviewed and acted on, including unexpected findings in routine specimens. This agent tracks specimens from OR records and watches for each result. If a result is not back within ten days, it contacts the lab to trace the specimen. When results arrive, it checks that the surgeon reviewed them. It flags unexpected findings, such as cancer in a routine gallbladder or appendix, and checks that the patient was told and any referral was made. If the action is not documented, it reminds the surgeon and keeps the item open. The surgeon handles all patient communication. Edge case: if the patient has moved care elsewhere, it asks the surgeon to send the result to the new provider and logs it.

How it works

Follow the arrows from top to bottom. The orange dashed arrow is the loop: when a check fails, the agent goes back and tries again.

An example run

What happensA gallbladder was sent to pathology on March 4. By March 14 no result had arrived, so the check failed. The agent called the lab, which found it in the wrong queue. The result came March 15 and showed a small adenocarcinoma. The agent flagged it as unexpected. Dr. Mark Tran reviewed it, called the patient, and the agent closed the item after the referral was placed.
