PayPerByte MCP server

by 0rkz

Lets your AI look up and buy pay-per-use data feeds, paying small amounts of USDC per request.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “Screen this merchant before I pay them”, the PayPerByte MCP server connects it to PayPerByte data feeds, and you get back the data plus a receipt.

This is a helper that connects your AI assistant to PayPerByte, a marketplace where data feeds are sold one request at a time. Instead of a monthly subscription, you pay a small amount for each piece of data your AI fetches. It is handy if you want your AI to pull live data like weather, market info, or security checks without signing up for accounts.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already knows. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an outside service. This one connects your AI to PayPerByte, so it can browse the data catalog, check prices, and buy individual data packets for you. When you ask a question, your AI quietly talks to this helper, which talks to PayPerByte.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI something like what is the weather or is this merchant safe to pay. Your AI passes that request to this helper. The helper looks up the right feed on PayPerByte, sees the price, and if you have a wallet set up, pays for the data in USDC. The data comes back with a signed receipt that proves those exact bytes were delivered. Your AI then shows you the answer in the chat.

What you can do with it

  • Browse and search the PayPerByte data feed catalog
  • Check a publisher's reputation, subscribers, and earnings
  • Buy a single data packet and pay per request in USDC
  • Screen a merchant domain and payout address before you pay them
  • Subscribe to a data stream on the test network
  • Verify that data you received matches its signed receipt
  • Check your USDC and ETH wallet balances

Try asking your AI

  • “List the PayPerByte catalog and show me prices”
  • “Get the current weather for Tokyo”
  • “Screen this domain and payout address before I settle a payment”
  • “Are there any earthquakes over magnitude 4 today”

What it gives back to you

You get back the actual data you asked for, like a weather reading, an earthquake list, or an ALLOW/WARN/BLOCK verdict. Along with it comes a transaction hash showing the payment went through, and a verification result confirming the data matches its signed receipt. Your AI can show you all of this right in the chat.

Before you start

What you need

  • Node.js installed on your computer
  • The Claude desktop app or another AI app that supports MCP servers
  • A crypto wallet private key if you want to buy data (read-only browsing works without one)
  • Some USDC in that wallet to pay for data feeds

Good to know

Buying data spends real USDC from your wallet, so use a dedicated wallet with only what you can afford to spend and set a spending cap if you want one.
