DOMShell is a Chrome extension that turns your browser into something that looks like a set of folders and files. Your AI can then walk through a webpage, read what is on it, and click buttons, all by using familiar commands. It is handy for anyone who wants their AI to look things up on the web or fill in forms for them.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with you. It cannot see your browser or touch a website. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to another app. Here, the helper connects your AI to DOMShell in Chrome, so it can look around a page and act on it when you ask.

What this MCP server does

You ask your AI to do something on a website, like find a price or click a button. The AI sends that request to DOMShell. DOMShell looks at the page through Chrome's accessibility tree, which is the browser's own map of what is on the page. It finds the right element, reads it or clicks it, and sends the result back. You then see the answer or the action confirmed right in your chat.

What you can do with it

  • List all your open tabs and switch between them
  • Read the text of a page or a section of it
  • Find buttons, links, and input boxes by name or type
  • Click a button or follow a link
  • Pull a table off a page as structured data
  • Search a whole page for a word or phrase
  • Open a new tab with a web address

Try asking your AI

  • “Open the Wikipedia page about artificial intelligence and summarize the first section”
  • “Find the search box on this page and type in my query”
  • “List all the links in the references section of this article”
  • “Click the Submit button on the form and tell me what happens”

What it gives back to you

You get back plain answers in your chat: lists of tabs, the text of a page, the names of buttons and links, or the data from a table. When the AI clicks something, it tells you what it did. You can also ask for just a summary, and it will give you that.
